RACCC Kayak Pool Session May 19

Paddlers will be able to practise various skills and work on self rescue techniques, rolling skills and bracing.  One instructor will be availble to provide assistance as needed. Bring your own kayak or sign out a club boat and bring it. Click here for more information.

Basic Sea Kayak Skills 2016

Description:

This course provides an introduction to Sea Kayaking (including flatwater or lake kayaing). The successful participant will obtain Paddle Canada certification for Basic Sea Kayaking skills http://www.paddlecanada.com/sea-kayak/866-basic-kayak-skills.html. The course provides the skill and knowledge necessary for kayaking in sheltered waters. The course includes an overview of paddling skills (lifting & carrying a kayak, forward and reverse strokes, sweep strokes and draws), basic rescue skills including wet exit retrieving a kayak and assisted re-entry, and knowledge topics such as boat design and equipment.

Pre-Requisites (skill level of certificate level):

Participants should be comfortable swimming while wearing a PFD.

 

Recommended for:

This course is intended for people who would like to learn how to paddle a sea kayak in calm water.

 

Course Fee:

$50.

 

Additional Costs:

Participants should budget an extra $30 for shared transportation costs including parking fees.

 

Participants must provide their own sea kayaks for this course. Participants will need a fully equipped kayak, preferably a sea kayak but a recreational kayak will do as long as it has bulkheads and separate compartments (no single chamber hull), paddle, spray skirt, Pfd, whistle, pump or bailer, throw rope.

The club has two kayaks available on a first-come-first served basis. Local retailers MEC (http://www.mec.ca/AST/ContentPrimary/Services/Stores/Ottawa.jsp), Jenda (www.Jenda.com) and Trailhead (www.trailheadpaddleshack.ca) all have sea kayak rentals available.
