Paddle Canada Canoe Tripping Skills Courses (Intro and Adv) 2018

Full Course registration means that you are automatically signed up for the seminars.

Two Paddle Canada (PC) Canoe Tripping Skills certification courses (Introduction and Advanced) will be delivered in the form of seven individual classroom seminars (below) AND a canoe trip weekend scheduled for July 13-15.
NOTE: The seminars are also open to those not taking the full certification course: members and non members. 

Both Intro and Advanced course participants are strongly encouraged to attend all the seminars for successful certification, however subject matter can be reviewed during the trip weekend.
(NOTE: the two Advanced Navigation Seminars : May 31 and June 2 are mandatory for the Advanced certification.)

The full certification course (Intro or Advanced) fee is $130
and includes attendance at all seminars and the trip weekend, PC certification for successful participants, canoe rental and use of RACCC equipment.
Full Course registration means that you are automatically signed up for the seminars.
There will be an additional cost for the trip weekend to cover your transportation, park camping fees if applicable, and share of the food – under $100.
The certification course is available to RACCC  members only.

 Canoe Tripping Seminars
(These seminars are included for those taking the Full Canoe Tripping Certification Course)
The seminars are also open to club members or non-members who are not taking the certification course.
Evening Seminars: 7 PM SHARP to 9 PM at the RA Centre at 2451 Riverside Dr. (Room/Location - check at East desk)
Cost per evening seminar :
For those just wishing to attend some of the Evening Seminars - you don't need to register in advance but can pay 'at the door' except for the advanced navigation sessions on May 31 and June 2 where you should call Jay to register.  The fees are $5 per evening for members and $10 for non-members with the exception being Advanced Navigation June 2: $20. 

Saturday, June 2nd seminar: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM in Kanata (Location info will be provided to participants)
Cost:  June 2nd Seminar:  $20 for members and non-members.

NOTE: Advanced Navigation: Participants may take the evening May 31st only OR both May 31 and Saturday June 2nd: Those who wish to participate in the June 2nd training MUST also take the May 31st training.

May 3   Course Code: 540  Course Fee: $5 for members and $10 for non-members
Meal planning and preparation options; cooking gear, making fires and cooking on fire; selection of and use of stoves; water treatment, waste disposal and personal hygiene.

NOTE: Presentations and notes are posted in the attachments at the bottom of this page. (We will try to post all the presentation info within a few days of each Seminar)

Personal gear, clothing, outerwear, footwear; tents, mats, and sleeping bags; packing and waterproofing; group gear, communications; repair and first aid kits; 10 essentials.
 

May 24  Course Code: 542  Course Fee: $5 for members and $10 for non-members
Room: Courtside B

Essential navigation, topographic maps and using a compass to follow a bearing – never get lost! 
Bring an orienteering compass if you have one. Some compasses will be available.

*May 31 
Course Code: 543   Course Fee: $5 for members and $10 for non-members
Room: Outaouais

Advanced navigation
(mandatory for Advanced Tripping Skills certification).
This is a requirement for those wanting to attend the June 2nd course.

*June 2  Course Code: 544  NOTE: SPACE IS LIMITED (contact course conductor, Jay Morrison to 'register')
Course Fee: $20 for members AND non members.
Saturday: 9 AM to 5 PM in Kanata : registrants will be advised of location
Advanced navigation, practice map and compass outdoors
(mandatory for Advanced Tripping Skills certification).
NOTE: May 31 is a requirement for those wishing to attend the June 2nd course.

June 7  Course Code: 545  Course Fee: $5 for members and $10 for non-members
Room: Courtside A
Trip planning; risk management and leadership.

June 14  Course Code: 546  Course Fee: $5 for members and $10 for non-members
Room: Outaouais

Navigation using GPS; search and rescue.

Prerequisites:
The Course Conductor will discuss these prerequisites with course participants.
The prerequisite for the Advanced course also includes PC Introductory Canoe Tripping or equivalent experience.
The Advanced course emphasizes leadership.
