INTRODUCTION TO WHITEWATER TANDEM CANOE 2017

For individuals with little or no moving water / whitewater canoeing experience, this course aims to introduce the basic skills and techniques needed to maneuver through white water rapids. Emphasis will be placed on canoe skills, understanding whitewater principles and river safety. Successful participants will receive Paddle Canada Introduction to Moving Water certification. A partner is not required, pairs will be arranged by instructors.

 

PRE-REQUISITES:

  • Able to paddle a tandem canoe from both bow and stern positions in flat water
  • Comfortable swimming in moving water

DATES:

4 course sessions are offered in 2017. Each consisting of a full weekend at Palmers Rapids. A planning evening will also be arranged prior to the weekend course.

$150

 

ADDITIONAL COSTS:

Participants should budget an extra $50-100 for shared transportation and camping costs (food/fees).

 

EQUIPMENT:

Canoe rental is included with course fee. Private boats may be used, but they must be fully outfitted with thigh straps and floatation, and must be pre-approved by course instructor.

The club has paddles, white water helmets and personal floatation devices (PFDs) available for student use. Participants are encouraged to bring their own personal gear if they already own, but you must talk to you instructor prior to the course to ensure your equipment appropriate for whitewater training. If you are considering buying gear prior to the course, you may wish to check with the instructors.

Participants require their own tent and sleeping bag for camping at Palmer’s rapids.
