August 2, 2021

We originally planned to go on Sunday, but due to weather we moved it to Monday, and unfortunately a few people weren’t able to join us. After loading up canoes and gear the boat house, the five adventurers (3 adults and 2 kids) were on the road around 7:30am. Just before Arnprior, one of the cars sadly hit a heron, not a great omen. Luckily there was no damage to the car or canoes, so we were able to continue. After a coffee stop in Renfrew, we made our way to the Algonquin Park Sand Lake gate.

Our original plan was to launch at the Squirrel Rapids, paddle west to the Brigham Chute & Falls portage and back. Brian had recently done this route on the July 5 club trip, so we decided to switch plans. We stopped and walked the Barron Canyon Trail, which gave a beautiful view of the canyon we would soon be paddling. We continued to the Brigham Lake put-in, and dropped all the gear off. Cory and Brian drove back to the Squirrel Rapids, left a car and then returned. This would allow us to paddle the full length of the Barron Canyon.

After Brian took a short “dip” in the water at the put-in, we were on the water around 11:30am. A beautiful paddle along Brigham Lake brought us to a short 100 m portage, and after a 100 m paddle we got to the second 440 m portage around Brigham Falls. We portaged our gear then stopped for lunch. A few waded in the water, and Cory and Dylan walked back up the portage and got some photos of the falls.

We got back on the water around 1:30pm for the highlight of our day, the 100 m cliffs of the Barron Canyon. It was a beautiful and leisurely paddle along the river, with many people on the water, including many kayaks and a few SUP’s. We arrived at Squirrel Rapids around 3:30pm.

After picking up the car from Brigham Lake, we loaded gear, had a light dinner and were on the road before 5pm. We hit a bit of long weekend traffic on the way back, but made it to the boat house by 7:30pm. Although a long day of driving, definitely worth it for such an awesome day trip.
