Waterfront Canoe Course for Parents & Children Report

On June 30th twelve people took part in the first YCCC Paddle Canada Waterfront canoe course at Petrie Island park. We were four children, two teens, three adults, two instructors and one assistant instructor. The weather was perfect for a day at the beach.
We were taught water safety, the parts of the canoe, how to paddle forwards, turn, stop and go backwards. We watched as Callum and Quinten were rescued when their canoe tipped. We all cheered when they got back into the canoe. A picnic on the beach was followed by a swim and beach exploration. The "Sponge Toss" game was our favourite because it was a hot day. We practiced our stopping using "Red Light Green Light". There was a race that required us to paddle with our hands and leave our paddles in the canoe. We all ended up wet. We got special sunglasses as a reward for a job well done. When the canoeing was finished some of us visited the nature centre and the Turtle Trail. We saw Murtle the Turtle, a great blue heron and ostrich ferns. What a fun way to spend the day!
