FLATWATER FUN CANOE RESCUE SKILLS DAY August 22, 2020 (Postponed indefinitely per COVID-19)
Prerequisites:
RACCC members,
16 years of age or older. (NOTE: Minors must have a parent on site during the course)
All Participants should be comfortable swimming while wearing a PFD
Description:
This will be a fun day on the water reviewing, refining, learning, trying canoeing assistance/rescue skills.
This is a non-certification training event to show some 'new to RACCC' rescue skills (from British Canoeing and the American Canoe Association and a few other sources).
Be prepared to swim and have a lot of fun besides learning and trying some new skills!

Activities include:
- Rescue safety principles,
- Rafting up: for tired paddlers, tows, canoe rescues, supporting injured paddlers, challenging crossings....
- Throw ropes,
- Swimming with a pfd,
- Canoe rescues: tandem and solo (canoe over canoe, curl, scoop the swimmers)
- Using a loop to help swimmers, how to use a flip line and quick release tow line,
- Emptying a swamped canoe: on shore, in deep water (Capistrano and Shakeout)
- What to do if you have 2 canoes swamped,
- What to do if you have gear in the canoes,
- Towing a swamped canoe (swimming, and, with a canoe)
- Tired paddler’ tows from the British Canoeing (cool stuff)
Date and Time:
Saturday August 22, 2019 9:30 - 4:30 PM
9:15 meet at the RACCC Boat House to organize car pooling, equipment and canoes
10:00 at our put in, paddle and practice until 3:45 PM (includes lunch and bio breaks)
4:30 PM - we will have returned to the Boat House to return equipment
Equipment:
- The RACCC has canoes, paddles and Personal Floatation Devices (PFDs)
- Private boats may be used: to be pre-approved by course instructor.
- Participants are encouraged to bring their own PFD and Paddle.
