RACCC Training 2021 Update

Hi Everyone,

Normally around this time of year you would be hearing about all the exciting training and trips
we are preparing for the upcoming season BUT as we all know COVID-19 has placed much of
what we love doing on hold, on pause, or undecided. We did, however, want to reach out to all
of you to provide a snapshot of this past summer’s training program, while also providing an
early heads-up of possible options we are considering for the coming 2021 open water season.

Training during summer 2020 was understandably limited with only two whitewater courses and
one sea kayaking course taking place. In addition, some individual coaching was offered by
select experienced members and instructors.

Looking forward to the 2021 open water season, the club is in the initial stages of planning a
training program, but, similar to last year, the scope and timing of that program will be
dependent on local and provincial public health advisories, as well the club’s COVID-19
protocols, which will be updated during March and April.

It is the club’s hope that a 2021 training program will be possible and, as such, reflecting on last
year’s experience, we are considering the following possible options (Note: more details will be
available before the ‘on-line open house’ that is tentatively scheduled for late April):

White Water Canoe: Currently looking at the below dates for whitewater courses and clinics (click here for updates):
● Friday to Sunday, 4 - 6 June 2021
● Friday to Sunday, 11 - 13 June 2021
● Paddle Canada Intermediate Solo course, date TBD.
● “Harness the Power of the River” courses hosted by Andy Convery’s, one day solo, one
day tandem, on the Petite Nation on the June 19-20 weekend.

Note: Courses and clinics will be held at Paddlers Co-op unless otherwise indicated.

The club may do more than one course depending on demand by members. If you are
interested in white water course or clinic please email the Training Co-ordinator at

Flat Water Canoe: Courses and Clinics information below (click here for updates):
● Courses are “to be determined” at this time, but we are hoping to organize a few late
summer courses so stay tuned.
● Clinics for beginner tandem canoe possible dates are as follows:
○ Saturday, 29 May 2021
○ Sunday, 30 May 2021
○ Saturday, 10 July 2021

Sea Kayaking: the club would like to offer Paddle Canada Level 1 and Level 2 courses:
● Level 1 Late May / Early June and Late summer (2 day course)
● Level 2: If you are interested in participating in this course please email me ASAP.
This is a 5 day course maybe able to reduce with online webinars to cover some of the
theory.
If you are unsure if the level 2 course is for you, but are interested please contact the training
co-ordinator (Dan Bezaire) and we can discuss what options would work for your development.

Camping/Tripping program: Program will be modified from years past with more information to
follow in late March but here is the general idea.
● The spring camping/tripping seminars will be moved to virtual ones where possible
● Looking at day training with limited group size to work on hard skills and skills that are
not possible virtually.
● Overnight trip / skills assessment to be planned with those interested (required if seeking
certifications).

First Aid: We are looking at running an in house First Aid course (Advanced Wilderness First
Aid / Wilderness First Responder or bridge courses) these courses will be in the fall (Oct/Nov)
time frame if you are interested please let me know so we can compile a list of how many
people and what level or recertification needed.

If you have any questions, ideas, concerns etc please contact Dan, his information is below.
