2020 Camping/Tripping Training: Evening Seminars

The 2020 Camping SkillsTraining Program is available to RACCC Members and non-members, so bring your camping buddies! These training events are for people who are new to camping/tripping as well as those with experience. Besides these Tripping Evening Seminars, check out our Camping-Tripping Paddle Canada National Certification Courses

French River 2019 110SEMINAR 1:  What does it take to go Camping / Tripping in the front and back country?  Where to go in our region:  Day Trips, Weekend Trips, Multi-Day Trips

This seminar opens our Tripping Seminar series with key concepts and check lists from RACCC and Paddle Smart re: Training, Trip Planning and Taking the Essentials from both participants and leadership perspectives. These principles apply to front country, back country, remote and very remote destinations.
We will review some recommended flatwater canoeing destinations in our region.
Learn how Tripping and Paddling training courses complement each other with knowledge and skills -  enabling participants to plan and have safer, fun outings.

Algonquin 2019 104SEMINAR #2:  Meals, Cooking, Fires, Stoves, Water Treatment and Waste Management

Menu and meal planning, preparation options; cooking gear: selection of and use of stoves; cooking on fires, water treatment, waste management and personal hygiene, organizing your camp kitchen for efficiency, safety, environmental protection.

Gear and packing:
Personal gear, clothing, outerwear, footwear; tents, mats, and sleeping bags; packing and waterproofing;
Group gear, communications equipment; equipment repair, first aid kits, the 10 essentials.|

SEMINAR 4:
  Essential Navigation with Map and Compass

Essential navigation, topographic maps and using a compass to follow a bearing. Never get lost again!
Bring an orienteering compass if you have one. Some compasses will be available.
NOTE:  this seminar is a  prerequisite for the Advanced Navigation training.

SEMINAR 5: Advanced Navigation with Map and Compass:
PREREQUISITE: Attendance at Seminar #4:  Essential Navigation with Map and Compass REGISTRATION: ONLY WITH COURSE DIRECTOR:  XXX info to be posted soon.
This training includes an evening classroom session followed by a Saturday practical Field trip.

Several risk management wilderness scenarios will focus discussions on safety, problem solving and leadership.

Expeditions:  Going further and farther
Expedition Camping adds expedition-specific knowledge and skills for those who want to participate in longer camping trips (for example 14 days or more).  Wilderness Camping skills or Camping Leadership skills course participants can add this to their certification
