Whitewater Training

Introduction Whitewater Solo – 24-26 July 2020

Intended for individuals with little to no moving water / whitewater solo canoe experience. This course aims to introduce paddlers to the basic solo skills required to navigate through whitewater rapids. Emphasis will be placed on solo canoe skills using the 2x4 method as well as understanding whitewater principles and river safety. Successful participants will receive Paddle Canada Introduction to Moving Water Solo certification

COVID Restrictions:

The following restrictions will apply:

  • all participants must sign the RA COVID Acceptance of Risk form
  • all participants must have a negative COVID test in the week prior to the course and bring the form to the course and provide it to the instructor
  • travel and tenting will be by household groups only (no car pooling or shared tenting otherwise)
  • all meals will be by household group or individual. All participants must bring their own food and kitchen utensils.
  • distancing and wearing of masks on shore will be required and club protocols for sanitizing club equipment must be followed.

Equipment:


Private boats may be used, but they must be fully outfitted with thigh straps and floatation, and must be pre-approved by course instructor.

On the water, closed toe shoes that will not fall off in rapids / swims, are mandatory. Crocs and flip flops are not permitted.


RACCC has paddles, white water helmets and personal floatation devices (PFDs) available for student use.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own personal gear, but you must talk to your instructor prior to the course to ensure your equipment appropriate for whitewater training.  If you are considering buying gear prior to the course, you may wish to check with the instructors.

Minimum age 13


If under 18, the participant's parent or guardian must be present on site.

Dates: Wednesday 22 July evening in-town prep session.  Instructors will advise time and place.

            Friday 24 July (late PM) to Sunday 26 July (early evening arrival in Ottawa)

Location: RA Centre and Palmers Rapids (about 2.5 hrs drive from the RACCC Boat House)
