Winter Seminar - Weekend Trip Ideas

Wednesday 14 April 2021, 07:00pm - 08:30pm

Four experienced Club trip leaders will provide information on their favourite destinations. Information about these destinations will include driving instructions, route descriptions, paddling and portaging challenges (if any), preferred campsites, scenic locations, swimming and hiking opportunities and adventures that they have experienced. Join in and receive answers to your questions about these routes.

Because of the COVID restrictions all this year's seminars will be held on Zoom.

Details for joining the meeting are provided here for logged in club members. For security reasons and to help ensure that we do not exceed the capacity of our Zoom account, please do not share the login details with people who are not members of the RA Canoe Camping Club.

Non-club members can get the joining instructions by contacting Mark at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Basic level guidelines on Zoom are on the club website here. A 1-2 minute review of the guidelines will be held at the beginning of the seminar.

Free canoeing books and maps

We received a collection of canoeing related books, booklets and maps from a member of the community. These items were already offered to the Canadian Canoe Museum, and we are now ready to offer them to RACCC club members.

Winter Seminar - Club FW Day Trips in 2020

Wednesday 07 April 2021, 07:00pm - 09:00pm

Karen Hurd went on over 40 days trips between June and December 2020. Many of them she led or co-led and many of them were first time destinations for her. Most trips were within an hour and a half drive from Ottawa.

Her presentation, including photos, will provide information about the trips she went on, how to get there, and some of the resources that she used to research them.

General Meeting Guidelines

Even with small number of people participating in online seminars it is easy for meetings to get out of hand. Since our seminars may have large numbers of people participating it is important to have guidelines in place to allow people to participate in an orderly fashion.

PLEASE NOTE: There will be a different presenter for each seminar , as a result these guidelines will change slightly from one seminar to another. Each seminar will begin with a very brief review of the guidelines that apply to that seminar

Figure 2 (website access) and Figure 3 (Zoom application) below have screen shots of Zoom. From them you can see how to access the functions listed below.

• Mute your mike
o Barking dogs, playing children, and flushing toilets can be irritating to others. Please mute your mike until you are called upon to speak. When you are finished speaking, please mute your mike again.
• Raise your hand
o We will be watching for people raising their hands. When there is an appropriate break in the presentation, we will call on you.
• Use chat for comments or questions
o You can post your comments and questions in the chat room by typing them in the box at the bottom of the field. You can direct you question or comment to the entire group or to a specific person. We will be monitoring the   chat room. Depending on the comment/question we could respond right away, or we could wait to a suitable break in the presentation.
• Be patient
o This is the first time that the club has done virtual seminars. We are all volunteers, and we are doing the best that we can.

What do you think?

As we said, this is a new process for us. We would love to hear from you to learn how we can improve future presentations.
If there is anything that you think we did well or if you have suggestions on how we can improve, please send them to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Please mark your calendar for Wednesday, April 21, 2021 and plan on joining us between 7:00 PM and 8:35 PM via a Zoom Meeting. The Open House is the best time to plan your paddling season. Check out the Flatwater, Whitewater and Family programs plus the extensive lineup of Training courses scheduled for the upcoming season. Unlike past in-person annual Open Houses, this year's virtual version will not offer the opportunity for chats with other Club members.
