Burritt's Rapids 2018

Burritt's Rapids May 5 2018 - First FW Trip

IMG 4396 Edit EditOn Saturday, May 5th a group of ten of us headed out from the Boathouse to Burritt's Rapids (near Kemptville) for a paddle to Nicholson Locks (return). Given that Ottawa has turned from winter to construction season, the path to our put-in was diverted from the usual course.

The Rideau Canal was closed at Burritt's Rapids Lock Station and we put in on the canal a short distance west of the lock station (see the Canal Closed sign in one photo). We paddled upstream to Nicholson Locks in brilliant sunshine and against light winds.

After a picnic lunch at Lower Nicholson Locks, we hiked up to the waterfall and sluice above Upper Nicholson Locks to see the raging Rideau River.

By the time we boarded our canoes for the return trip the winds had increased somewhat. As a result, we all enjoyed a wonderful tail wind all the way back to Burritt's Rapids. When you are having a good day, things just go your way.

Participants on the trip were new Club members Beatrice P, Mark J, Susan O, Rob M and Matt H who showed off their paddling skills to Club veterans Kathy E, Helena A (with her friend Terry as her guest), Paul G and the trip leader Paul H. The trip enjoyed the calm company of its trip mascot Darla (Paul's well behaved beagle).
