CROTCH LAKE CANOE TRIP Sept 2021

SEPTEMBER 15-17, 2021

Sunny blue skies and warm breezes greeted the five members of the RACCC on Wednesday September 15 as we headed west along Hwy 7 to Crotch Lake, a short drive north of Sharbot Lake along Hwy 509 and Ardoch Road. Karen H, canoeist extraordinaire, led our group consisting of Lynn O, John F, Bridget D and myself, Jane Maxwell. After 1 ½ hours on the highway we reached Tumblehome Lodge where Karen had arranged for us to leave our cars and begin our journey.

Crotch Lake Conservation Area is well worth a visit given its proximity to Ottawa. It exudes a quiet and peaceful beauty to the visitor. There were few other campers in the middle of the week so we really had the lake to ourselves.

It was a short paddle (2 km) to Karen’s favourite campsite on the south end of the lake, and a beauty it was – a large island with a sandy beach for easy landing and good swimming. It offered five or more tent sites and a great view toward the north. Much to our delight another RACCC member, Jane O, turned out to be our neighbour, occupying a site on the other side of our island. Jane O was doing a solo outing with her kayak but joined us for our evening bonfires. On Thursday we set out to explore the northern portion of Crotch Lake which is really two lakes in one separated by a long, narrow channel in the middle. We managed to make it as far north as campsite #20. Despite concerns about possibly facing a stiff wind on the way home, we enjoyed gentle breezes throughout the three days and fantastic weather. Most of the group managed a swim on Thursday. Sun was abundant and warm.

A big “thank you” to Karen for her usual top-notch planning and leadership. Thanks as well to my fellow campers. It was a pleasure sharing such a beautiful lake and campsite with all of you. Happy paddles.
